Welcome to the Crown & Anchor

Picture the scene - and what could be more typically English than this broad tree lined street with grand houses,  a couple of churches and set in an attractive North Yorkshire village. All this surrounded by glorious scenery and at its hub, of course, the village pub.  Welcome then to Sowerby, just outside the famous racing town of Thirsk, and to The Crown & Anchor.

Recently refurbished throughout, (no plastic here) The Crown & Anchor is very much a “locals local” with a carefully selected hotchpotch of quality furniture and traditional decoration creating a home from home atmosphere for the local residents and one into which passing tourists feel happy to venture.

At the centre of any public house is the quality and range of drinks available and, here The Crown & Anchor excels; so much so that, as a result of the four beautifully maintained real ales always on offer, they have a recent commendation from the North West Yorkshire region of CAMRA.  At The Crown & Anchor these ales and a further impressive choice from the well stocked bar can be enjoyed in  relaxing and comfortable surroundings. As a ‘Measure of Quality’ they use the generous 35 ml measure for all spirits including a great selection of single malts and cognac.

Their ‘no nonsense’ lunch and dinner menu also provides food for thought. Ranging from sandwiches and bar snacks to full meals with all the trimmings, The Crown & Anchor uses fresh locally sourced ingredients and seasonal vegetables in a varying menu which includes vegetarian options. Pre-booking is advised, a highlight of the week being a truly impressive Sunday roast lunch.

The Crown & Anchor has a large car park, attractive beer garden, darts and a large plasma screen with Sky Sport Open daily from 12 noonTV.  They accept all major credit and debit cards and offer true Yorkshire hospitality and excellent value.
